Who is responsible
Malta Noise Log is an independent research project run by [your name]. For any question about this notice or the data, write to [contact email].
What is collected
When you submit a report, the site stores only what you enter in the form:
- the locality (from a fixed list, never an exact address or point)
- the type of noise, and whether it involved a breaker or excavator
- the date, start time, optional end time, and how often it happens
- how disturbing it was, on a 1 to 5 scale
- the optional note you write
- the time the report was received
The site does not ask for your name, email, phone number or an account, and it does not store your IP address with your report. It uses no cookies, analytics or advertising trackers, and loads no fonts or scripts from other companies.
If you press “Use my location”, your browser works out the nearest locality on your own device. Your coordinates are never sent to the site.
To prevent abuse, a scrambled code made from your connection’s IP address is kept for 24 hours, separately from your report, and then deleted automatically. The IP address itself is never stored.
To keep the data local, the site checks whether your connection appears to be in Malta. Reports from outside Malta are kept for review before they are shown. Only this yes/no result is stored, never your IP address. Network data: ip-location-db, by NRO, CC BY 4.0.
Your browser keeps a count of how many reports you sent today, on your own device only, to limit repeated submissions.
Your note
Please don’t write names, addresses, phone numbers, vehicle registrations or anything else that identifies a person. Every note is read before it is published, and notes that identify someone or contain abuse are not published. The rest of the report is still counted.
Why, and on what basis
Reports are used to research where and when everyday noise is a problem in Malta and Gozo, by which sources, and how often it falls outside permitted hours. Results may be published in reports, presentations or academic work, and the anonymous data is published on this site as a map and charts.
The legal basis is your consent, given with the tick box on the form, together with the research safeguards in Article 89 of the GDPR: data is kept to the minimum needed and published only in anonymous form.
Who processes the data
- Supabase stores the reports in a database hosted in the EU (Frankfurt, Germany).
- Cloudflare hosts the website. Like any web host, it keeps short-lived technical logs of visits, which can include IP addresses, for security and operation. These logs are not linked to your report.
Suggestions and feedback
If you use the suggestions box, your message is stored so it can be read and considered. Giving an email address is optional and only used to reply to you. Messages are never published, and they are deleted once they have been dealt with, or after one year at the latest.
How long it is kept
Reports are kept for 3 years from submission and then deleted, unless they are needed for published research, in which case only the anonymous data is kept.
Your rights
Because reports are anonymous, there is usually no way to tell which report is yours, so it may not be possible to find, correct or delete a specific report. If you can describe it closely (locality, date, time and note), write to the contact address above and it will be removed if it can be identified.
You can complain to Malta’s data protection authority, the Information and Data Protection Commissioner (idpc.org.mt).
